With so many things to do in and around the town, it only makes sense that there are many options when it comes to places to stay in Prairie du Chien. For a town with a population of just under 6,000, it seems a bit overboard that there are 34 hotels! And with vacation rentals (such as VRBO and AirBnB) becoming more and more popular and preferred, they have been popping up to offer alternatives to the many hotels.
So with so many choices, how do you decide where you want to stay in Prairie du Chien? The three biggest factors to take into consideration are (not necessarily in this order)
1. The number of people in need of accommodations
2. The location of the event(s) you are traveling for
3. Amenities required
4. Price
The majority of all events and happenings are located either downtown or on St. Feriole Island, so if the reason you are visiting and looking for a place to stay in Prairie du Chien is anything but boating, keep those two locations in mind. In the summer, Prairie’s biggest draw is of course the river! With several boat ramps found along the river’s edge from North to South, being close to your take out point, with somewhere to park your boat at the end of a day is a huge plus.
The relatively small area circled in black is where ALL the downtown action (live music, food, festivals) takes place. I was surprised to find that when googling for places to stay in Prairie du Chien and sorting by guest experience of 4.5 stars and up, only TWO hotels came up, followed by a handful of vacation rentals, most of which were located across the river in Marquette, IA. Interesting! The two most popular hotels near downtown are the new Waterfront Hotel and the long-standing (but newly renamed) River District Hotel. Both of these options offer an excellent location within one block of all the downtown music, bars, food and fun and the river. These hotels are typically priced in line with one another, which in early May was around $140 nightly. In the peak of summer (June - September), rates jump to $250+ per night on weekends. If you require more than one room, that’s where it can get a bit pricey, but the same can be said for all hotels. The Waterfront Hotel has a great bar and restaurant with a HUGE waterfront deck, and the River District has an indoor pool.
